Describes an overarching theoretical framework that is explicitly designed to meet the current and emerging cancer prevention-control challenges posed to behavioral medicine and health psychology by building on the relevant cumulative findings of cognitive and social science. The Cognitive-Social Health Information-Processing (C-SHIP) model systematically analyzes how individuals cognitively and affectively process information about their health, medical risks, and treatment options and how this information translates into health-enhancing or health-defeating behaviors. The focus is on the dynamic, yet stable, structure of relations among the cognitive-affective mediating units that process cancer-relevant information and that lead to decisions about and the execution of cancer-relevant behaviors. We first describe the cognitive-affective mediating units identified by the model and then review the literature that pertains to these cognitive-affective dynamics. Finally, we discuss the implications of the model for the design of interventions to facilitate decision making, adjustment, and adherence in the face of cancer risk and diagnosis.
